Sinners
Sinners is the movie of the decade—no question about it. It’s officially earned a spot in my top 10 favorite films of all time. With brilliant writing and directing from Ryan Coogler, this film redefines what it means to blend horror and drama in a meaningful, cinematic way.
Coogler has created something powerful here. Sinners isn’t just a film—it’s a statement. It’s a chilling, emotional, and deeply human story that explores the roots of community, culture, and survival, all set during the haunting era of Jim Crow and slavery. The way the cast’s chemistry brings this world to life is unreal. It’s not just about horror—it’s about people of color finding unity, comfort, and identity in a place designed to break them.
One of the most powerful elements in the film is the music. Music becomes a language of its own—bridging past, present, and future, and holding space for both joy and pain. That emotional connection to sound becomes even more relevant as the film introduces its horror aspect: vampires. But these aren’t just bloodsuckers—they’re symbolic. They represent a desperate need for community, and in a twisted way, they form a cult-like brotherhood of their own. The duality of horror and heart makes this story feel both terrifying and profound.
Even if you took out the horror element, this would still be a 10/10 film. The performances are that good. Michael B. Jordan delivers the best performance of his career playing the twin brothers Smoke and Stack—two characters with a dark past who are trying to forge a better future. He gives each twin such a distinct voice and presence on screen, it’s hard to believe it’s the same actor. Truly phenomenal work.
And then there’s Miles, who plays Preacher Boy Sammy. This is his first role in a film, and he absolutely kills it. Sammy is the heart of the film’s musical soul, and Miles brings that to life with raw, honest energy. It’s rare to see a first-time actor command the screen like that.
Visually, Sinners is stunning. Shot entirely on 70mm film, the cinematography is just breathtaking. Every frame looks like it belongs in a museum. It’s gritty, warm, ghostly, and beautiful all at once.
I do no doubt that this film deserves Best Picture, Best Lead Actor, and Best Cinematography. Ryan Coogler has done something unforgettable here. Sinners isn’t just a movie you watch—it’s one you feel. And once it gets into your soul, it stays there.
